Located in the eastern end of the Ville-Marie borough and going as far as the railway line, the Sainte-Marie district border the St. Lawrence River. Even in the heart of the city, this district is characterized by its reminiscent architecture of duplex and triplex buildings lined in rows. Here you will find several small, atypical treasures. Overview of its History

Born in the 1840s and nicknamed the “Faubourg à m'lasse”, it was primarily an industrial place that welcomed French-Canadian workers.

With a view to the developing downtown Montreal, the Sainte-Marie district has gradually been transformed into a service center location since the middle of the 20th century. Today, you will find the home to Radio Canada, the Sûreté du Québec, the Société des Alcools du Québec (SAQ), Télé-Québec and many other head offices.

Since 2011, the city has revitalized this district by landscaping green spaces and revitalizing the main streets.

What to Discover

This neighborhood has a strong cultural presence, thanks to the Frontenac House of Culture, 2 Libraries and numerous theaters such as Free Space and Usine C. You can discover unique pieces and artists from various forms.

In fact, a portion of Ontario Street is reserved for pedestrians on certain weekends. Animations and cultural events follow one another for the happiness of the ones passing by.

Want to taste food from somewhere else? Mexican Guadalupe, Wawel Polonaise Pastries, Sata Sushi and Coop Touski Coffee are the favorite places due to their unique menus!
